Kaltura allows faculty, students, and staff at Rutgers to create or upload videos to a streaming server, which makes sharing them easy for everyone. You could think of our Kaltura server as Rutgers own YouTube-like service.
To launch Kaltura and create new video with CaptureSpace from within your LMS (Sakai or Canvas):
- Log into the LMS and select ‘My Media’
- In Sakai, “My Media” can be found on the left-hand navigation bar in your “My Workspace” homepage
- In Canvas, “My Media” can be found in each of your courses listed on the left-hand course navigation bar
- Click the “Add New” button at the top right of the screen
- Select “Create Recording”
If this is the first time you’ve created a recording with Kaltura, you’ll need to download the CaptureSpace software (NOTE: you’ll need admin privileges on your computer to install this)
- If you’ve already installed CaptureSpace, wait a moment or two and it will launch automatically
- Select the combo you’d like to record, for instance, “screen” (note all options include audio from mic)
- Choose to record your full screen or just a selected area (which will require clicking “select area” to specify the window to record)
- You’ll get a 5-second countdown before the recording starts
- Press <alt>-p to pause the recording
- Click Done (or cancel if necessary)
- The new video will immediately play back; click Done in the bottom right corner of the screen
- Type the name of your new video and click Upload to save it to the Kaltura streaming server
- The video will now appear in the Kaltura “My Media” page
- You can embed the new video in any Sakai Lessons page or send a link from the Share button. You can also download the original video file as an mp4.
