The way Sakai works, if students have a blank score on an assessment, they will be “excused” from that assignment—it will have no negative impact on their calculated final grade. Notice that blank scores appear as a dash or hyphen character in Gradebook. To make sure that students who deserve a zero on a particular assignment actually receive a zero:

  1. Forum discussions or assignments: Be sure to enter a zero for any student who has not submitted by the due date (unless you’ve made specific arrangements to the contrary).
    1. Go to Gradebook, from the left-hand menu
    2. Click the title of each assignment
    3. Scan down the list, looking for empty boxes
    4. Type in a zero if necessary
    5. Click “save changes”
  2. Quizzes
    1. Go to Tests & Quizzes, from the left-hand menu
    2. Click Published Copies tab
    3. Select Action: Scores (or click the number in the Submitted column)
    4. From the grading page, scan down the list, looking for empty boxes
    5. Type a zero in “adjustment” box if necessary
    6. Click “update”
    7. (Note: if you want to change all the blank boxes to zeroes at once, you can use the “apply this score” option at the top of the grade list. Type a zero in the “apply this score” box, then click the button.)
