Sakai: Allow students to post in folders in Resources
If you want students to post documents to share with other students, this is one simple option. (If you want the students’ work to generate discussion, you might prefer to set up a discussion forum, where the students can attach their documents.)
create a new folder
- log into Sakai and click on the tab for your course
- choose Resources from the left-hand menu
- you’ll see at least one folder (the “top-level” folder is called Resources)
- to the right of the top-level folder, click the “Add” drop-down menu and select “Create folders”
- type a title for your new folder (e.g., Student Essays)
- click “Create folders now”
- now you can see your new subfolder, indented under its “parent” folder
change permissions so students can post
- to the right of your new folder, click the “Actions” drop-down menu and select “Edit Folder Permissions”
- now, carefully check three (3) boxes only–in the “student” row:
check “Create resources” and “Edit own resources” and “Delete own resources” - click Save
Note: These permissions will allow students to post “new” documents and revise and delete their own documents (but not those posted by other students).
instruct students to post to the new folder
- students must go to Resources, then click the “Add” drop-down menu to the right of the new folder (e.g., “Student essays”)
- in most cases, they will select “File upload” (to contribute to a collection of documents) or “Add weblinks” (to create a class webliography)
- more details on uploading can be found in the Sakai tip: “Sakai-Add Resources”
