Sakai

More about Sakai...

A small group of intrepid Rutgers—Camden faculty members volunteered to teach with a brand-new set of tools in the fall of 2005. JT Barbarese (English), John Broussard (Finance), Heike Bücking (Biology), Gail Caputo (Criminal Justice), and Roger Cowley (Physics) also offered their students the opportunity to work with, and comment on, the Sakai open-source Collaboration and Learning Environment (CLE).

As of fall 2007, Rutgers offers Sakai as a full-blown Collaboration and Learning System to all faculty, staff and students.

Sakai is being developed by a consortium of US research universities, lead by Michigan, Indiana, MIT, and Stanford, with more than fifty other universities, including Rutgers, contributing. As a CLE, the Sakai system offers all the tools of a commercial course management tool (such as WebCT, Blackboard, or eCollege), plus tools to facilitate research collaborations. For more details about Sakai's goals and features, see the project page. To see how Sakai works at Rutgers, point your browser to sakai.rutgers.edu and login with your netID. To see a course site in the making, click the "Membership" link on the left, then click "Joinable sites" at the top of the new window. Select the site called "Camden IDT" and have a look around.

Sakai is a set of collaboration, communications, and pedagogical tools that will continue to grow as the faculty, students, and staff of participating universities continue to be inspired.

Please contact me, Emily Corse, if you have any questions or if you'd like to create your own Sakai site (corse@rutgers.edu or x6474)!
